Alnova reduces carbon emissions by 40 percent

Alnova Balkongsystem AB takes a major step toward a more sustainable future – fully aligned with Fasadgruppen’s sustainability ambition.

Since its founding in Gamla Sockerbruket, Gothenburg, in 1979, Alnova Balkongsystem has grown from a small company with two employees hand-sketching railings to a leading employer with around 65 employees, operating a highly digitalized process from design to production in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.

The company’s sustainability efforts have also advanced significantly, reaching a new milestone this year. Alnova is proud to take another major step toward a sustainable future by transitioning to a new type of aluminum in its production of balcony railings and other products.

“By switching from aluminum that generates 6.7 kg CO₂ per kg to one that generates only 4 kg CO₂ per kg, we are reducing our carbon emissions by 40 percent,” says CEO Magnus Odhagen.

50 kg carbon savings per meter
In 2023, Alnova used nearly 500 tons of aluminum in production.

“This shift would result in an annual carbon emission reduction of 1,350 tons. From now on, all our aluminum-based products will be made with this lower-carbon material. It is incredibly important and feels great to contribute to a more sustainable future.”

A balcony railing contains an average of 11 kg of aluminum per meter, meaning a carbon saving of 29.7 kg per meter with the new material.

“A glazing system contains an average of 19 kg of aluminum per meter, leading to a 51.3 kg carbon saving per meter of glazing.”

Leading the way
According to its suppliers, Profilgruppen and Hydro, Alnova stands out in the balcony railing and glazing industry.

“We are the first balcony supplier in Sweden to purchase Low Carbon aluminum from Hydro and Profilgruppen. Our customers have responded very positively, and we are proud to lead the way for others. Sustainability is something we must work on together.”
