The Stockholm Concert Hall was built between 1923 and 1926 in neoclassical style. Designed by architect Ivar Tengbom, the building holds the highest level of cultural heritage classification. Now, the facade is set to undergo a careful renovation with great respect for its historical values, a project entrusted to STARK Facade Renovation. The work will continue for approximately 1.5 years and is scheduled for completion by summer 2026, when the Concert Hall celebrates its 100th anniversary.

– "At STARK, we see every building as a unique project and take on each challenge accordingly," says Stefan Karlsson, CEO of STARK Facade Renovation.

The Stockholm Concert Hall holds the highest cultural heritage classification – blue – in the City of Stockholm’s system for buildings of historical significance. Renovating the building’s facade must therefore comply with several protective provisions under the Swedish Planning and Building Act (PBL).

The goal is to restore, repair, and preserve the building’s original materials, finishes, and colors as much as possible. This will help highlight the architecture and aesthetic and historical values of the building for current and future generations.

STARK Facade Renovation has over 60 years of experience in facade work. Over the years, they have handled everything from small-scale projects to large turnkey contracts on many of Stockholm’s properties. Some of STARK’s most notable projects include the facade renovation of the Grand Hôtel, Bro Hof Castle, the Tessin Palace in the Old Town, Katarina Norra School, and the ongoing renovation of the Manilla School on Djurgården in Stockholm.

– "The age of a property is a key factor in determining how the work should be carried out. Renovating older buildings in Stockholm often requires greater care from us to avoid damage. These buildings also require more extensive preparation work than newer ones," says Stefan Karlsson.

The assignment at the Stockholm Concert Hall involves renovating all plastered surfaces. The entrance-level sections are also included, with some areas being replaced with new steel and glass elements. Sheet metal, wrought iron, and balustrades will be renovated, and some parts replaced. Wall fixings will be installed as part of the project. Finally, new signage and lighting for the facades will be added.

– "No facade is the same, which is why there’s no universal solution for how best to carry out a renovation. In this industry, it's crucial to have broad knowledge so you can approach different projects with different needs – and that’s something we offer."

"At STARK, we see employee training as a fundamental part of our business," says Stefan Karlsson.

The majority of STARK Facade Renovation’s project managers and leadership team have backgrounds in masonry and the construction industry. The company also employs engineers to provide extensive expertise and depth in their daily work.

STARK Facade Renovation works with both original materials and techniques used in the careful renovation of heritage buildings, as well as with modern facade systems that offer strong energy performance and various certifications such as P-marking.
